Dear valued customer:

It’s been a while since we spoke and I just want to update you with a few bits and pieces which you may be interested in; and some things just to brighten up your day.

Our news:

Having enjoyed the Royal Wedding (or at least the bank holidays that came with it and the further may day and spring bank holidays} it’s back to the grindstone for us all.

The time of year for us is the time that the public sector go out to tender and we have been putting in stupid hours to cope with the onslaught of work involved in tendering.

We are hopeful that our efforts may be rewarded with a contract or two but in the mean time we continue to push hard to keep our men busy and all enquiries are very welcome.

Our Heritage man Jeremy is now studying for a PTTLS course, which is a teaching course to enable him to pass on his expertise to others in our organisation and in the wider roofing sector; and we wish him well with his studies.

To make you smile:

http://uk.akinator.com/ (This website can guess any character, real or fictional!)

Inspirational Thought of the Month:

“Don’t ever sell your product, service or company. Sell what it will do for your prospects and clients.” – Richard Denny

Our recommendation of the month:

Update your profile regularly on Construction Line, as without the correct profile, buyers will not find you in their search.

Keep training, keep up with the new ‘E’ procure tendering and try to keep smiling through the mountain of bureaucracy.

Regards,

Geoff, Gareth and Josh

Surviving the recession is no mean feat and our survival is largely down to the hard work and optimistic attitudes of our people. I would like to thank them for that and also our loyal customers who have repeatedly hired us for their roofing requirements.

We have recently taken on a new member of staff in the office to assist with estimating and administration. His name is Josh Hairsine. He’s seventeen years old and far more computer-literate than Gareth and I, which is a bonus in the digital age. Having been with us for five months now he has already become an integral part of the team.

We now have a fully qualified Heritage slating/tiling and leadwork CSCS cardholder in Jeremy Hellas (our most experienced roofer). He is one of the first in the area to hold this prestigious card. We hope, in the coming months, to get him qualified as an assessor in the skills to help upskill the industry in the future.

Choosing the right kind of natural looking roof tile for your building project can be a tricky subject, however we believe that you can’t get any better than choosing one of the options below. If you are looking for that natural look then these popular tiles do just that and can give any grand project a classically beautiful finish. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list of tiles, so if you are thinking of embarking on a roof project and wanted the full lowdown on what roof tile to choose then why not get in touch or contact us on 01482 306555.

Westmoreland slate

Westmoreland slate originates from the Lake District and Cumbria and has been quarried there for over 250 years. It is olive green in colour and has a beautiful rugged texture formed from hundreds of millions of years old volcanic ash. The olive tone results from chlorites within the rock which are salts of chlorous acid. The slates are generally random in form and are used to compliment rural areas in buildings such as church halls, cottages, country estates and hotels.

Westmorland slate is well known throughout Britain and the World often and quite expensive to source and as such Balmoral Green Slate and Fesco Lake Green tile can be a cheaper alternative.

Welsh slate

Welsh slate is said to be the toughest natural slate in the world. It is believed to have the longest lifecycle (over 100 years) when compared to any other slate and is available in a wide variety of colours, although the most popular is in it’s natural state which is dark grey and rugged in texture. Welsh slate has been quarried for hundreds of years and in the 1500 became the principle export of Wales. It is a very popular roof tile and is often used on cathedrals, libraries, offices and public buildings, again suiting but not exclusive to a rural setting.

Spanish slate

The Northern slate producing region of Spain has unique geological characteristics that are evident in the durability and natural aesthetics of Spanish slate. Spanish slate is used throughout the Britain for most projects including residential developments, commercial and retail buildings, hotels and leisure projects, and are all regularly specified with natural slate roofing. Its natural aesthetics and durability make it the perfect roofing material.

It is affordable and easily available alternative to domestic slate and it has similar characteristics to locally quarried slate and is long lasting. Spanish slate is also suitable for the restoration and repair and is often chosen by councils and public authorities for this purpose.

Rosemary tiles

The Rosemary tile adds distinction and character to any pitched roof and has been in use for over 160 years. Produced from Etruria Marl, Rosemary comes in a range of red tones that create attractive and striking roofs. The distinctively random look of the Rosemary Craftsman tile offers a more hand craft clay style and typically vintage.

The Rosemary tile is relatively new compared to the previously mentioned slates, however, is used throughout the UK and very popular on both new builds and new housing estates as well as more traditional buildings.

Due to the recent cold weather, houses and homes up and down the UK are facing broken and damaged guttering. Lingering snow, thawing, refreezing and then further snow falls have turned the roof lying snow into compacted ice, and in a lot cases, sliding the snow towards he edge of the roof and placing unexpected excessive weight onto guttering systems.

Many homeowners are experiencing problems such as guttering which have buckled, sprained and in some cases been completely destroyed. House owners are also experiencing significant damp problems on walls and window sills resulting from water escaping down exterior walls, or problems resulting from blocked gutters by ice, leaves, nests or infestations.

Once your gutter becomes blocked, rainwater will flow directly out of the gutter and overflowing onto the walls and windows of your home. Badly neglected gutters may have weeds, grass and plants growing in them which adds to the problem. When water constantly overflows from blocked guttering, damaged bricks and mortar will occur and this will cause excessive damp and mould to the walls of your home as the moisture is absorbed. Burst and cracked down pipes and blocked drains all play their part in weathering of gutters and should be checked before more costly water damage to bricks and plaster occurs.

Prevention is the ultimate cure: Clearing a Gutter

Simple gutter cleaning can be achieved without specialist knowledge. It is something that should be done on a regular basis, however, if there is one time in the year when you must do it, it is once you have had significant shedding of leaves from nearby trees which is around October / November in the UK.

To clear the gutter:

1. Use a ground sheet to catch any debris. Don’t be tempted to go up your ladder with your hands full. Trying to bring a bucket along with you to catch any leaves will only serve to get in the way.

2. Make sure you have a sturdy ladder and is securely erected against the side of the house. Gaining the services of a helper volunteer here is highly recommended, they can stand on the bottom rung of the ladder to add extra weight, thus securing it further.

3. Use a strong implement such as a broom handle or extendable brush to dislodge debris from gutters. Make sure your scraping implement is not too cumbersome and unwieldy and don’t be tempted to over reach. Push the leaves and debris over the sides of the gutter allowing to fall to the ground mat below.

4. Work slowly and on small patches at any one time. Climb down from the ladder and move along to the next patch making sure you work thoroughly, clearing the gutter as you go.

5. Use a small watering can or hose if you have one long enough to wash any small parts out of the system and test to make sure you have returned good drainage to your gutters.

If you require the services of a Yorkshire guttering company make sure they offer the full service and pay attention to detail such as installation of gutter guards and gutter shingles to protect from damaged guttering caused by blockages.
